Creating Career Pathways to Expand Dental Care in Maine

News & Resources Category: Grants, Success Stories

At the DTA Foundation, expanding access to oral healthcare starts with investing in people.

Through a recent pilot project supported by a $25,000 grant, Penobscot Community Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center, developed an innovative solution to a critical workforce challenge.

By recruiting individuals eager to begin a new career, regardless of dental or medical background, PCHC created a paid, on-the-job training program for dental assistants. Participants are hired as OJT dental assistants and supported every step of the way as they build their skills.

PCHC’s current dental assistants, many of whom completed the same program, now help mentor new trainees alongside a dedicated trainer and supervisor. This hands-on support system builds confidence, develops real-world skills, and helps participants successfully transition into their roles. Together, they create a full-circle model, where today’s learners are guided by those who were once in their position.

In 2025, five new dental assistants joined the team, increasing the dental assistant-to-provider ratio. With more trained staff in place, PCHC has expanded its capacity to serve patients, many of whom face barriers to accessing care.

This initiative demonstrates how investing in workforce development can create a lasting impact.
